SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Telecom stocks were among the most active shares in Monday's market session following AT&T Inc.'s announcement that it will acquire Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA wireless business for $39 billion. The deal combines the No. 2 and No. 4 wireless carriers in the U.S. Following the deal's announcement, AT&T shares rose almost 3%, while Deutsche Telekom's U.S.-traded shares rose almost 14% after the deal's announcement. Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 14% as the No. 3 U.S. wireless carrier is seen as being negatively impacted by the AT&T and T-Mobile deal. Verizon Communications , the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier, rose 3.5%, and discount mobile-phone network provider MobilePCS Communications Inc. was up more than 5%. American Tower Corp. , which operates many cellphone towers related to the deal, fell as much as 9%.
