Ga., Calif. banks fail, bringing '11 total to 21

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A bank in Georgia and one in California were closed on Friday, bringing the total number of U.S. bank failures for the year so far to 21. Springfield, Ga.-based Citizens Bank of Effingham, which had roughly $206.5 million in deposits, was closed, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said. Napa, Calif.-based Charter Oak Bank, which had roughly $105.3 million in deposits, was also closed, the FDIC said. The two bank failures will cost the federal deposit-insurance fund a combined $81.2 million.
