U.S. stocks pause ahead of holiday weekend

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks were mildly lower Friday after a near-netural start, with investors reluctant to make big moves ahead of the long holiday weekend. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off nearly 3 points at 1,3315.53. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was off 1 point at 1,339.46. The Nasdaq Composite gained a fraction to 2,831.85.
