HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Hong Kong shares advanced early Friday as banks powered ahead in the wake of a rise on Wall Street, although a decline in local property developers capped broad market gains. The Hang Seng Index rose 0.4% to 23,388.29 and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index added 0.6% to 12,655.18. Heavyweight HSBC Holdings PLC added 0.9% and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd. rose 1.2% to lead Chinese banks, while Ping An Insurance Group rose 1.8% as analysts remained positive on valuations. Local property developers continued to drag on the market, with Cheung Kong Holdings Ltd. dropping 1.1% and Hang Lung Properties Ltd. shedding 1.7%. China's Shanghai Composite gave up 0.6% to 2,908.49.
