Airline stocks decline on soft economic data

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Airline stocks declined Thursday after economic data showed living costs were on the rise and a bigger-than-anticipated number for weekly unemployment filings. At last check, the NYSE Arca Airline Index fell 0.3% to 46.61 points with all but two of its 13 components trading off. The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index declined 0.4% to 1,331 points. Shares of United Continental Holdings fell 1% to $27.20, American parent AMR Corp. slipped less than 1% to $7.50 and Southwest Airlines shed 4 cents to $12.34.
