U.S. stocks open higher on positive earnings

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks began Friday with strong gains on better-than-expected quarterly results from corporations including General Electric Co. and Microsoft Corp. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 84.84 points, or 0.7%, to 13,048.94. The S&P 500 rose 7.04 points, or 0.5%, to 1,383.98. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 12.48 points, or 0.4%, to 3,020.04.
