Merkel backs Schaeuble to head euro group: report

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel is pushing to have her finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, head the euro group of euro-zone finance ministers when Jean-Claude Juncker steps down later this year, the Financial Times Deutschland reported Friday. The head of the group chairs meetings of finance ministers from the 17 countries that share the euro. Juncker, who is prime minister of Luxembourg, has served as president of the euro group since 2005. The report said French President Nicolas Sarkozy isn't in favor of Schaeuble's candidacy out of fear it would give Germany too much power.
