CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- A top Indian politician on Friday vowed to set on fire any Wal-Mart store that opens in the country, the day after the government approved a plan to allow multinational retail chains into the market, AFP reports. "By allowing Wal-Mart to directly invest in the retail sector, the government has jeopardized the job opportunities of the poor," said Uma Bharti, of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "I will personally set fire to the showrooms when they open anywhere in the country and I am ready to be arrested for the act." On Thursday, the government announced it would open up a long-protected retail sector, estimated to be worth about $470 billion in annual sales, to let foreign firms in, AFP noted.
