TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is planning to fight debt collectors' use of warrants to arrest people who owe money on credit cards, loans and other bills. She told The Wall Street Journal that she would urge state-court judges to deny requests by lawyers for the debt-collection industry to issue such warrants. The Journal reported on Tuesday that she also planned to file enforcement actions against companies that abuse their ability to seek such arrest warrants. More than a third of U.S. states enable courts to imprison borrowers who can't or won't pay their bills, the Journal reported. Such warrants are typically issued when a debtor doesn't show up for a court hearing or doesn't make payments when ordered to by a judge, the Journal reported.
