CHICAGO (MarketWatch)-- DirecTV , the No. 1 U.S. satellite provider, saw its shares rise 5% Thursday following its report of better-than-expected third-quarter results, buoyed by customer acceptance of the NFL Sunday Ticket package. DirecTV said it posted a profit of $516 million, or 70 cents a share in the period, on sales of $6.84 billion. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of 73 cents a share on sales of $6.74 billion. The NFL Sunday Ticket has long been an important draw for DirecTV, an exclusive offering that can make a huge difference to U.S. football fans who want to see games not shown in their local market.
